How to Stop J.Jill Catalogs: Phone, Mail and the 8-Week Wait
Why J.Jill Catalogs Keep Coming (and Why the Fix Takes Weeks)
A direct-mail opt-out from J.Jill takes up to 8 weeks to process. J.Jill sells in its stores, online and through its catalog. Catalog mail has its own opt-out, separate from the ones for email and text.
Ordinary shopping puts your name on the list. Any purchase, exchange or return, online, by phone or in a store, gives J.Jill your name and shipping address, and its privacy policy lists adding you to its mailing lists as one use of them. A gift someone sends you adds your address the same way, and J.Jill may update addresses from third-party providers. J.Jill's catalog-request line is 800-343-5700, which is also the number that handles removals.
You have four realistic ways out. The first is J.Jill itself, by phone (step 1) or by letter to its customer service center in Tilton, NH (step 4). The other three either file the request for you or cover many mailers at once. J.Jill is one of the brands in the guide to stopping clothing catalogs . Catalog Choice has its own J. Jill page, PaperKarma works from a photo of the catalog, and DMAchoice lets you choose which catalogs and other promotional mail you get. Email, text messages and partner sharing each have a separate opt-out, covered in step 1.
How to stop J.Jill: step by step
Contact J.Jill directly, or let Catalog Choice file it. Call 800-343-5700. Customer service hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET on Saturday. The line is closed Sunday. The same number takes catalog requests, so say at the start of the call that you want to be removed from all J.Jill catalogs and direct mail. Give the four details J.Jill asks for: your full name, your mailing address, your email address, and the types of communications you no longer want.
The direct-mail terms and contact details, verbatim:
Direct Mail: If you receive direct mail from us, including catalogs, and wish to unsubscribe, you can opt out by contacting us directly using the contact information below. Please be sure to include your full name, mailing address and e-mail address along with the types of communications you do not want to receive. It may take up to 8 weeks to process an opt-out for direct mail.
Contact Us
If you have any questions or requests in connection with this Privacy Policy or other privacy-related matters, you may email us anytime, contact us by phone at 1.800.343.5700, or write to us at the following address: J.Jill, Customer Service Center 100 Birch Pond Drive Tilton, NH 03276
If you would rather not call, Catalog Choice can send the request for you. It is a nonprofit working to stop junk mail, and its J. Jill page files an opt-out from both J. Jill's mailings and name trading. You can track the status of the request and J.Jill's response on your Catalog Choice dashboard. You have to log in or register before you can create the request.
While you are dealing with J.Jill, close the other three channels as well:
- Email: click the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of any J.Jill promotional email.
- Text: reply "STOP" to the number J.Jill's texts come from to cancel recurring automated marketing texts.
- Partner marketing: to stop J.Jill sharing your details with non-affiliated retail partners for their own direct marketing, click Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information on J.Jill's site and follow the instructions.
Report the catalog through PaperKarma. Take a photo of the J.Jill catalog as proof that you received it. PaperKarma then contacts the mailer and its associated lists to remove your address. Most opt-out requests are processed within 24 hours. Larger mailers print one to three campaign waves in advance, though, so meaningful results take about 2-3 months. The PaperKarma subscription costs $24.99 a year, which covers all seasonal mailers, or $3.99 a month for mailers already in its database. Both come with a 90-day money-back guarantee. PaperKarma makes sense when J.Jill is one of several catalogs you want gone. For J.Jill alone, step 1 does the same job without a subscription.
Register with DMAchoice.org. DMAchoice is the mail preference service run by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA). The FTC points consumers to it for choosing which catalogs, magazine offers and other mail they get. It stops most promotional mail, but not all of it.
- Online: an $8 administrative fee for a 10-year registration, paid by credit card or PayPal.
- By mail: a $9 check or money order payable to the ANA, also for 10 years. Send it to DMAchoice Consumer Preferences, P.O. Box 900, Cos Cob, CT 06807.
- Name variants: you can add up to four additional names to your account. This helps when catalogs come addressed to a nickname, an alias or a misspelling of your name.
The FTC lists lower fees, $6 online and $7 by mail, than the $8 and $9 charged at registration. Plan on the $8 or $9. DMAchoice also keeps a Deceased Do Not Contact List for catalogs that still arrive addressed to someone who has died.
Write a letter for a paper trail. A letter gives you a dated record of when you asked, so you know when the 8-week window ends. Send it to J.Jill's customer service center with the four details J.Jill asks for:
1J.Jill, Customer Service Center 2100 Birch Pond Drive 3Tilton, NH 03276 4 5Please remove me from all J.Jill direct mail, including catalogs. 6 7Full name (as printed on the catalog label): 8Mailing address: 9E-mail address: 10Communications I do not want to receive: catalogs and all other direct mailKeep a copy, and write the date you mailed it on that copy. If several people in your household get the catalog, list each name as it appears on its label.
Want to stop ALL junk mail, not just catalogs? OptOut.ws covers junk mail, spam and telemarketing.
What to expect
J.Jill's own processing takes up to 8 weeks. PaperKarma results take about 2-3 months (8-12 weeks under its subscription terms), because mailers print campaigns in advance and mail can still arrive after an opt-out has been processed. So one or two more J.Jill catalogs after you ask is normal and does not mean the request failed. DMAchoice will not stop all promotional mail either.
If catalogs are still coming after 8 weeks, check the mailing label first. Contact J.Jill again by phone or letter and give the name and address exactly as printed. If the label shows a variant of your name, such as a nickname, an alias or a misspelling, add that version to your DMAchoice account as well. Also confirm that email and text were stopped through their own opt-outs, because a catalog request does not switch those off for you. If J.Jill is the only catalog you want gone, contact J.Jill and skip the paid services. Add Catalog Choice, PaperKarma or DMAchoice if several catalogs keep arriving. If any step here is out of date, send a correction .
